Local POD Plus Galerkin Projection in the Unsteady Lid-Driven Cavity Problem
نویسندگان
چکیده
A local proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) plus Galerkin projection method is applied to the unsteady lid-driven cavity problem, namely the incompressible fluid flow in a twodimensional box whose upper wall is moved back and forth at moderately large values of the Reynolds number. Such a method was recently developed for one-dimensional parabolic problems. Its extension to fluid dynamics problems is nontrivial (especially if rough CFD codes are used) and consists of using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code and a Galerkin system (GS) in a sequence of interspersed intervals ICFD and IGS , respectively. The POD manifold is calculated retaining the most energetic POD modes resulting from the snapshots computed in the ICFD intervals; in fact, the POD manifold is completely calculated in the first ICFD interval but only updated in subsequent ICFD intervals. Intended to mimic industrial solvers, the CFD code contains unphysical terms that are introduced for purely numerical reasons to accelerate runs. The use of such a CFD code poses the question of which equations should be Galerkin projected onto the POD manifold, the exact governing equations or the CFD numerical scheme. Also, Galerkin projection can be made using either the standard L2 inner product or a nonstandard one, based on a limited number of mesh points. After addressing these issues, a method is constructed that is able to accelerate the CFD code by a factor of the order of 5–15, depending on the Reynolds number and the nature (steady, periodic, or quasi-periodic) of the forcing velocity.

Extension Ability of Reduced Order Model of Unsteady Incompressible Flows Using a Combination of POD and Fourier Modes
In this article, an improved reduced order modelling approach, based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method, is presented. After projecting the governing equations of flow dynamics along the POD modes, a dynamical system was obtained. Normally, the classical reduced order models do not predict accurate time variations of flow variables due to some reasons. The response of the dynam...

A method is presented to accelerate numerical simulations on parabolic problems using a numerical code and a Galerkin system (obtained vía POD plus Galerkin projection) on a sequence of interspersed intervals. The lengths of these intervals are chosen according to several basic ideas that include an a priori estímate of the error of the Galerkin approximation. Several improvements are introduce...
متن کاملEffect of Insulated Up and Down Lid Motion on the Heat Transfer of a Lid-Driven Cavity with an attached fin
This study investigates the effect of lid motion on the optimal characteristics a thin rectangular fin attached on the hot wall of a square lid-driven cavity with active vertical walls. The optimal fin position is studied for Richardson numbers of 0.1-10. The effect of mounting a rectangular fin with a thermal conductivity of 1 and 1000 on minimization and maximization of heat transfer through ...

In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was developed to determine the Nusselt number (Nu) along a wavy wall in a lid-driven cavity under mixed convection regime. Firstly, the main data set of input/output vectors for training, checking and testing of the ANFIS was prepared based on the numerical results of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Then, the ANFIS was develope...
متن کاملCharacterization of unsteady double-diffusive mixed convection flow with soret and dufour effects in a square enclosure with top moving lid
The present study considers the numerical examination of an unsteady thermo-solutal mixed convection when the extra mass and heat diffusions, called as Soret and Dufour effects, were not neglected. The numerical simulations were performed in a lid-driven cavity, where the horizontal walls were kept in constant temperatures and concentrations. The vertical walls were well insulated. A finite vol...
